After the show "Breath" that was repeatedly nominated for the "Golden Mask" and received the award for the set design of Ksenia Peretrukhina, the director Marat Gatsalov again works at Theater of Nations.
The characters of his show "Utopia" are simple inhabitants of the outback, who have almost no hope left. Only “Utopia” remained - an old, once out-of-business cafe, which suddenly needs to be revived by a businessman from Moscow. And not just to be revived, but to make "Utopia" like it was, exactly the same as in the 90s: with bad beer and garish interior. “But we can do better!”, the charecters object, they are just starting to spread their wings. “But we don't need it better, we need it - as it was,” the mysterious owner stops their initiative, unfastening money.
Have we changed since the 90s, is it possible today to go back - these are the questions asked by the creators of the show. The production is based on a new play by Mikhail Durnenkov, one of the best contemporary playwrights, with the text of which Marat Gatsalov’s directorial career once began: in 2008, he debuted with the play “Dangle” by Mikhail Durnenkov in the Center for Dramatic Art and Direction. And in 2010, “Exhibits” by Vyacheslav Durnenkov (brother of playwright Mikhail Durnenkov), staged by Gatsalov in the Prokopevsky Drama Theater, brought his first “Golden Mask” to the director.
